John has been a small business leader in WNC for 40 years with an MBA from UNC Chapel Hill. As CEO of NOC John shepherded an extraordinary group of people for 16 years as they grew to over $10 million in sales on the banks of the Nantahala and several other rivers around the Southeast. With his expertise in whitewater activities, John won several national championships, ranked as high as 7th in the World, competed in the 1972 Olympics, and co-authored the book “Whitewater Racing” with Eric Evans, another esteemed whitewater athlete.
In 1990 John and his wife, Jan Letendre, a CPA, finance officer, and executive coach, put a group of friends and family together to purchase and run the Nantahala Village, a 200 acre, 60 unit resort nearby. Rescuing a small business that had been important to the community and the region since 1948 was a labor of love and focus, and resulted in a successful sale in 2005. John returned to NOC as CFO in 2008 and was instrumental in its recent sale that launched NOC into it’s next chapter. Now, John brings his decades of experience and wisdom to the task of grooming and polishing business leaders as a workshop facilitator, a leadership coach, and consultant. John brings the same passion that drove him as an Olympian and entrepreneur to his roles with Moonshadow.
